Patterns have always been the heart of home décor, from our traditional rugs to patterned sofas and cushions, to matching curtains. But mixing and matching patterns has always been a dicey business and when it comes to picking out new wallpapers or even matching your bedcovers to the rest of the room, most of us tend to play it safe. Even though patterns can radically change the outlook of our rooms, we rarely give thought to how exactly we are utilizing them in our day to day life. Today, we’ll give you a few tips on how to consciously use patterns in your home decor.
Accent walls are a simple yet effective way to make a statement. Not only do they immediately define the aesthetic of your room, but they also add a pop of colour that can make your room go from gloomy to roomy in a matter of seconds. Accent walls are an easy way to explore different patterns, from your living room to your bedroom, and even your bathroom.
When exploring patterns, geometric is always a simple yet classy way to go Geometric patterns can comfortably fit into any aesthetic, from clean minimalist design to warm rustic tones. An easy advantage of using geometric patterns is that you can match it with the modern, minimalistic furniture that is easily available in the market nowadays. Geometric patterns are also easy to use on multiple surfaces as by just altering the scale of your pattern, you can produce vastly different results.
An easy way to tie together the patterns in your room is to match them with your wall art. If you’re having trouble selecting the colours for your patterns, pick out a colour from the painting hanging in your living room. If your painting is minimalistic, you can pair it with a clustered and small pattern, and if your painting has a lot going on, a minimalist pattern would be best.
Using more than one pattern side by side could give you a perfectly cosy living room, or it could end up in a designing disaster. The key to using multiple patterns is defining the hierarchy of the patterns being used. Select a dominant pattern, whether a rug or a wall or even the curtains and then match your other patterns in relation to that. If my rug has a pattern with large red diamonds, perhaps I can use a diamond pattern in my cushions as well, but on a much smaller scale and a more neutral colour.
A fun way to utilize outlandish patterns is to pair them with neutral colours to create a balance. No pattern is too bright, or too eye-catching if it is paired with the right neutral shade. If you have a heavily patterned wall, neutral furniture is the way to go. While if you have a sofa or an art piece with a heavy pattern, it would pop best against a neutral coloured wall.
While utilizing patterns, it is not necessary to use the same pattern in multiple places around your room, but it is important that all of your patterns follow a similar theme. A similar theme can just be the same colour utilized in multiple patterns. Or it could be the design of the pattern itself -a clean geometric pattern could look out of place paired with a traditional floral one.
