Architecture curated with brick dates to some 10,000 years. Maestros of Pakistan too have created sheer art, with brick as their medium, in form of buildings. Deriving their designs from the traditional architectural philosophy of the subcontinent to culminating styles and forms; Pakistani Architects have produced some timeless architecture. Listed below are a few of these local masterpieces.
Baba Hassan Din mausoleum is an artifact of brick built by the start architect, Kamil Khan Mumtaz, in Baghbanpura - Lahore, for two locals modern sufi ascetic; Hafiz Iqbal and his mentor Baba Hassan Din. They lived on the sight for a significant part of their life which is now their resting place under two identical domes, built entirely in brickwork without cement or iron bar support. This tomb complex has an exterior of Brick imitation (taza kari) and glazed tiles mosaic (kashi kari). The building craftsmanship of this complex required the revival of some special traditional tools and techniques.
Another masterpiece by the maestro, is Har sukh Mansion, located on Bedian Road - Lahore. it the residential complex of Mr. and Mrs. Jawad, their 4 children and grandchildren. Apart from the accommodation, the project includes an indoor pool, an Amphitheatre, music facility, dance and artists' studios. The brick haveli proves to be a reminiscent in its context as of rich regional tradition of landlords. Har sukh mansion is the best illustration of fat and ribbed dome brick construction and other traditional craftsmanship techniques.
This vacation home was designed in Charsadah in a vernacular vocabulary, for the exterior with the experience of modern-day facilities, on client's request. The project is made of playful inner courtyards and deep south facing verandas. This traditional brick facade residence is one of the intelligently executed local brick designs.
Agha Khan Award winning building, Nayyar Ali Dada's, Al Hamra Arts Council is located on Mall Road - Lahore. The term 'Al Hamra' is an Arabic word, which means 'Red Cloth' pointing towards the beautifully crafted red brick exterior of the complex, which completed over the period of 15 years. The original octagonal block is all covered in red brick, except for the corners, where it is glazed in glass to create punctures in the otherwise solid mass.
