Proportion in design: A cheat sheet for interior spaces

Proportion plays an important role in architecture for centuries. The English author Henry Wotton translated ‘de Architectura’ which was written by Roman Architect Vitruvius in 1624, and elucidated Vitruvius, three conditions of the good building to be usefulness, firmness, and delight. Proportion plays a vital role in all of three as it provides the guidelines for making useful spaces, designing structures and creating aesthetically pleasing environments. In a very basic definition proportion is ‘ apart in comparison to its whole’, a basic example can be a table’s height in relation to its length. When looking at the macro-level proportions of space can dramatically change how visitors feel in it and when looking at the micro-level it again instigates the change in emotions as the visitors enter the space. While so much of the world of interior design is subjective and a matter of taste, there are some fundamental principles that transcend all styles and trends, one of those key principles is proportion. In interior spaces/design proportion acts as a vital representation of size and how objects interact as a whole and to one another in any given space. There are multiple ways in which designers play with proportions in terms of patterns, light, size, shape and texture to achieve harmony and visually pleasing spaces.

1) Proportion of color

In an interior space, it is considered very important. Basically, it refers to the ratio of multiple colours in a space. One way could be creating a pleasing colour balance by repeating colours in different places within a space, others could be using a varying intensity and amount of colour. There is no thumb rule of using a proportionate colour scheme. However, the idea is to keep the tool of ‘proportion’ in focus while playing with colours.

2) Furniture

Furniture is considered as a focal element of most of the spaces and a vital organ of any interior design. While designing any interior space it is impossible to not think about the right furniture. Designing a room interior is more than just placing the furniture and other furnishings. In a space- it is important to understand the room’s parameters and the proportions of the furniture as well as the spaces in between. Proportions of the furniture according to the size of the space and the object’s dimensions are both extremely important to make any space look light and pleasing.

3) Proportion of light

The types of lighting in any space can dramatically change its aura. There are multiple types of artificial lights used in interior spaces for example table lamps, up lights, downlights, strip lights etc. When talking about the proportions of light it is obvious to consider both natural and artificial sources. Light changes the impression of a space, so by managing the light, proportions can be controlled successfully. In every detail of an interior space, light can draw or withdraw the user’s attention according to the need of the attention required, for example, if there’s an artwork on the wall it can be highlighted with a light whereas shadow on a shoe rack or a storage corner can easily guide the eyes away. Natural light is controlled by shutters, blinds or curtains, achieving a balance between both natural and artificial lights can be considered as a proportional use of light.
