It is a house where every space plays a very important function and each room opens out to either some form of plantation or an unobstructed view out of the window or a water body, which is a vital feature in almost all of the architect’s projects. The living environment reflects the personality of the occupants and the house should portray these changing moods and emotions at different times of the day. The house is not an obviously modern one. At the same time it’s not a completely traditional one either. It borrows from the past and places these elements into the present so that they blend to create a comfortable place for modern traditional living: an architectural expression therefore of a similar way of life, where some old traditions exist parallel to current ones.

The site is on a gradual slope, which was fully utilized by creating levels, which are not uncomfortable since each level is easily accessible within a few steps. A cohesive, volumetric relationship of spaces is achieved through this variation in floor levels. There is a subtle suggestion that one’s entering into a modern haweli. The quality of light, an important design element, is achieved by controlled openings, which mute the glare without sacrificing ventilation. The inner spaces have various frames looking out to either a water wall or plantation and skylights on top keeping the house pretty well lit all day. The multi leveled roof is another great part of the house. Walk out onto it and you can see the whole city stretched out before you. Split into three levels, this is inspired by the house in Sargodha that the architect lived in when he was younger, where in the summer the highest roof was always his to sleep on since he was the eldest of five brothers.
An essential characteristic of the house is the compactness of volumes and its low scale projections and parapets. It has both low-set and monumental openings keeping with overall heights of the house. The plan has the triple height circulation zone as the nucleus of activity with all other functions interlinked diagonally and vertically across it. The proportion and scale of the internal masses and external volumes has been controlled. A water wall that starts from the lowest studio office basement level stretches to the sunroom level and creates visual drama. In elevation, traditional local brick modulates the linear proportions of the entire house with a combination of textured (acrylic) coating in an earthy tone to go with the overall feel of the house.
