Working since 2006, DB studios believes in a holistic design philosophy inspired by nature that places an emphasis on form arising organically from the function. A step away from the generic look of modern architecture that can be a complete disconnect with the location. Our mission is to seek an energy-efficient design that while being firmly rooted in the modern tradition is inextricably tied to its geographical and cultural roots. In the centre of our designs are indigenous material is an ext Read More

Mr. JahanzebDaad along with his wife met me as a client in February of 2012 when I was setting up my office.
7 years later; JD is now one of my most treasured of friends and Yes- the house is also complete now!
Some projects are different!
That cold morning of February of 2012, we visited the site:
Peacefully located, the north facing 80x140 plot had rubble laying here & there on the ground- the left over from the previous- demolished house. I wondered what that demolished house looked like and who designed it..
Site analysis: Just a few broken bricks on a quiet cold sunny day.
JD was very clear from the start. He needed a home for his growing family; where his parents could spend quality time with his kids, where they could enjoy a good evening with friends and he could unwind with his buddies.
As we started designing and spending time with JD, we both started enjoying it; the patios, visual depths & connections between living areas, the cantilever, the central Rain forest.
The grey works went smoothly, until around the 6th month: JD bought the right side land for some extra lawn. This shook the integrity of the overall design in terms of both; plan and façade. We had to swap the whole rear area side ways to make the master bedroom enjoy the NOW new green area. The right side façade; which was previously considered as non-visible from the road, suddenly became visible and so we decided to have prefabricated veranda to break the flatness of the facade.
The structure was there, it needed to be finished. It was a slow process as we started exploring materials, products, and joineries. In every presentation; the dream got bigger and bigger. It became a shared labor of love.
Now comes the fun part!
We went to Italy together, rented a car; City-to-City, Quarry-to-Quarry by road, listening to ‘coke studio’ on loop.
We stayed at cool, posh and sometimes weird hotels and met interesting people along the way.
Our Aim: search for the best TravertinoClassico we could find for the house.
Thassos White marble was brought all the way from Greece.
We went to Dubai for rugs, garden products and more.
We spent some real good time in Milan, working long hours with Italian designers; going from design to design, showroom to showroom, factory to factory, searching for furniture, lights and decorative.
As an Architect, that much time in Milan, working day and night on a single project with these new super people was a whole new learning experience for me and I loved every second of it.
We returned & got back to completing medium to small tasks, working out small details and then the landscape part began.

The palms- based central rain forest evolved into a dramatic patio with a huge old tree, the right side elevation became alive by adding wooden verandas and decks, boulders were picked and brought all the way from Abottabad, the patios were enriched by adding carefully selected plants and trees with hours of discussions and fights between JD, me and Israr. Finally today, the house has seen the light of the day! It’s complete!
In terms of experiential learning, this project is to-date the most productive one for me. I am a different person & a different architect from what I was 7 years ago. There are some parts of the original design, which the ‘NOW’ ME wouldn’t design that way.
It is always hard when the architect wants to do something new and is in pursuit of perfection, but in my opinion, this project became even harder when along the way, JD also became a perfectionist. I believe we both cherish every second of it when we look back at it now and its a wonderful feeling to share the design of this house with everyone
I hope and wish JD a long and a content life with his family and friends! And I hope that we were able to give him a good design.
As JD would say ‘the taste has come!’
Welcome to your new home buddy!
