We were given an opportunity to design a mosque on one of the two plots designated for religious land use in KCIP, relatively the smaller one
The plot is surrounded by industries on three sides with only a small passage accessible on Eastern side of the plot. The plot size is almost 20,000 square feet with a capacity of housing a congregation of almost 2000 people.
The idea is to create a piece of Architecture that sooths / neutralizes the industrial environment by its presence.
Mosque basically consists of following parts.
· Prayer area
· Purity spaces
· Green pockets and water bodies
The mosque has been designed on straight contemporary lines. The approach towards the Mosque requires a spatial transformation from profane to sacred. Luckily the Qibla direction allows us to celebrate the same concept as the main prayer hall is tilted by 8 degrees in Qibla direction.
Prayer hall which is the main building is designed on a high plinth about Eleven Feet over the ground formation level. This will not only serve to give it dignity as a public edifice but simultaneously allow the basement to be incorporated without having to sink down deeper into the ground, which is water logged and prone to sulphate attack.
Prayer hall consists of a tapered roof with slanting planes moving up in Qibla direction to give worshipper a sense of direction towards divinity. The front part is designed to maintain a visual connection with outdoor green spaces.
While traditional domes usually surmount most mosques symbolizing its religious aspects; in this case the mosque is crowned by a raised skylight punctured on all four sides to bring in natural light. The ablution and toilet spaces are treated as pavilions with same language of projections echoing all around the elevations.
The color palette used mostly is the shades of grey to serve as a natural back drop to enhance the natural elements /colors designed in this Architecture.
