This house is built around a central atrium, which is designed like an outdoor courtyard. The stone floor atrium is surrounded by thick walls with built-in planters, from which the plants hang down into the central space. The atrium can be viewed from the corridor on the first floor, as well as from a bridge connecting the master bedroom with the children’s room. It therefore visually holds the whole volume of the house together.
The modest spatial program of this 4-bedroom 500-yard house, allowed us introduce this huge open space on the inside, while keeping the rooms reasonably large.
On the ground floor, this atrium is the space that greets you as you enter the house, and it provides a direct on-axis view to the main living space, and through the living space to an open court at the rear of the house, which features a water fountain. This allows a continuous and uninterrupted view from one end to the other, thereby making the house look very large and open.
