Overview

The Writers Box is a recent addition to Suhail & Fawad Architects residential portfolio in Islamabad. This split level home in Islamabad has been designed for the renowned poet and columnist Harris Khalique his wife Shabana and their two children. The design focuses on the self created garden in the center of the house and its rear external views that open out to a public park and natural green landscape beyond that. The architectural elements are especially conceptualized with every room opening out to either man-made courtyards or green spaces.
Small and large balconies are added on all sides as a major feature with brick jaali's standing tall in front of the grey and terracotta palette used to balance the blue of the metal. The house is well lit throughout the day while at night it becomes a private inward looking garden with wide corridors, living, bedrooms and a two storied study/ library opening into it. The formal drawing room is in the basement opening directly into the central water court which is designed as a garden with sitting space, plantations and tensile fabric covers over it so it can be used throughout the day.
The residence has been divided both horizontally & vertically. The rooms are placed on various levels in a way that each gets a balcony and green spaces to look out to but they somehow have a view into the central court on every level. It is a play of volumes, solids and voids with diverse color palette & brick that helps enhance the quality of space and is primary to the philosophy of the firm.
The idea was always to create an open frame plan with multiple levels which would celebrate the natural environment, abiding the philosophy of function over form in the sense that the final product is heavily dependent on interaction on part of the owners and visitors alike. The house was meant to act as a transparent box but on the inside, airy and well lit.
