Overview

This 500-yard house is in sector E7 of Islamabad and offered potential views of the Margalla Hills. The plot, however, was very challenging as the by-laws allowed for a very narrow strip of land that could be built upon. The house is therefore very linear. It is also very transparent, with a large glass surface area, which provides great views of the garden and the lily pond, really letting the inside and outside merge together. The rooftop area also offers views of the hills.

The client was very accommodating, which was a major reason for the success of the project. The freedom in terms of design, as well as in terms of the use of materials, allowed us to explore new ideas and think outside the box.

The main materials used are fair-face concrete, glass and Indian-green marble, which appears on the façade and is carried into the interiors as well. The palette on the interior is also very unusual, with use of dark colors that wrap the walls and ceilings. An interesting feature is the vertical garden at the rear of the house, which is on axis to the entrance. This enforces the transparency of the house, as the view on entering from the outside passes through the slim volume of the house to the green area at the rear.
